In today's big story, we're looking at how Corporate America is rethinking its sustainability and diversity efforts amid a push to avoid being labeled "woke." The rallying cry against companies' progressive campaigns is starting to leave a mark on Corporate America. AdvertisementAfter years of big promises and grand plans around social issues like diversity and sustainability, companies have taken a noticeable step back , Business Insider's Emily Stewart writes. The electric car maker axed more than 3,400 job postings in North America down to just three on Wednesday.

Plenty of companies are reining in their rhetoric and in some cases action on issues such as sustainability and diversity. Over the past decade, many corporations have at least professed to take a more active role in social issues, under pressure from their customers and, more importantly, employees. After last year's Bud Light debacle, which was a real blow to its business, executives fear they'll be the next target of some anti-woke outcry. For the fourth quarter of 2020, 131 companies mentioned ESG, and 34 mentioned DEI or diversity and inclusion. This may be a great un-wokening, but maybe corporate America was actually never that committed to the idea in the first place.

When asked, Gemini politely refused in some instances to generate images of historically White people, such as the Vikings. In the image space, if you asked previous AI image generators for an image of a CEO or a doctor, they initially almost always showed images of White males. Google announced its Gemini AI chatbot was pausing the generation of people in images after concerns were raised that it was creating historically inaccurate images. What makes censorship and manipulation worse with AI is that today’s AI already has a well-known hallucination problem. And growth in the percentage of women in senior corporate leadership roles overall barely budged from 2022 to 2023. In 2023, women held just 11.8% of the roughly 15,000 C-suite roles assessed, down from 12.2% the year before, the study found. Gender parity goal imperiledNone of this is to say that there hasn’t been real progress in narrowing the gender gap since 2005. “Across all [senior] roles, women held less than 8% of seats as recently as 2005; versus 22.3% in 2023. CNN —Elon Musk is showing the world how radicalized he has become. To those not fluent in the intricacies of right-wing media, some of what Musk said may have sounded bizarre or even foreign. But in the right-wing fever swamps, where Musk is now deeply entrenched, these are the issues that animate the masses. I think a lot of times, companies start by immediately bringing in diverse talent. To be able to fill all these future roles — even with AI — you're going to have to tap into diverse talent. I can't just show up at Georgia Tech and expect all the diverse talent to want to come to my organization. A false narrative is the talent just isn't there, or you're too small to attract the talent. Whatever the love language is for your company, grasp that and utilize that to push DEI forward.
